Are you one of the people who always look forward to a birthday celebration? Are you excited to celebrate your friends/family’s birthday? What have you done for those friends/family on their birthday?

And what is your thought about celebrating their birthday?

I kept this one simple question from a friend of mine a long time ago. He goes on saying ;

“why bother? It is just another year of you getting old. Nothing special to celebrating a birthday. It’s a reminder that you’re getting older.”

Everyone has their own opinion on birthdays but let me share mine...

A birthday is somehow a special day for me personally not only because it reminds me that I was born on that day years back but also because it is a day when you can look back to those years you have gone thru. The bitter-sweet journey that I have been thru brought me to where I am today. No matter how good or bad it is, I am grateful to have the chance to meet people that gave me lessons in this journey.

Let me bring you back to my birthday celebration from the first one till today.

The first one was when I am at the age of 6.

Mom and dad are doing it kind of fancy. That was the only birthday that my parents celebrated for me I think that is why I have a strong memory of that day. What is much better is that my birthday is on the 24th of December, and it is Christmas Eve! So that’s what makes it much more special. Mom was cooking Chinese for that night and could never forget her fried chicken and the red-boiled egg. Maybe I couldn’t remember much about the cake because I loved her fried chicken. I still do today. I’m kind of missing Mom cooking.

Everyone was singing a ‘happy birthday’ song to me, and I received so many presents. I was a very happy girl that day because I felt special. It feels like it’s just yesterday the day that happened and today I am 20 years ahead from that day.

My second birthday was when I was 16.

I was away from my family. I was not anywhere near my family. It was college time, and I was busy doing my assignment in my room. My roommate was fighting with each other about something, but it was kind of havoc. It was too loud that I have to get out of the room to look for them and try to stop them. One of them started to throw things and the same goes for another person.

Trying to let these people off the fight was useless. They kept on shouting at each other until the moment I returned to my room everybody was singing ‘happy birthday’ and smiling at me. It was all a drama made up to surprise me. That’s not all. On my way down to buy something, they did a bad prank on me but surprisingly I was not even mad at them. They were throwing eggs and pouring me with flour. I think the reason why I was not mad about it, was because I feel that they care about me.

I dropped out of college the next year and never had a chance to speak to even one of them until today. After that year, I celebrated my birthday alone without anyone. Every birthday I would take the day off, bought a cupcake, and celebrated my birthday in my room. I would play a ‘happy birthday’ song on my YouTube and make my own wish and blow the candle off after that.

I would always take a moment off to sit and close my eyes and rewind back to the years that I have been through. Tears and smiles would be my company. Thank you to God for all the things that have happened.

Life is beautiful on its own. It has all the things that we need to go through each and everything. Maybe some of you don’t bother about birthdays but somehow, be grateful. If it wasn’t for our parents, we won’t be here today.

They are the main reason why I celebrate my birthday. I am grateful to my parents who have taught me the lesson of life. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t know how I face this road that has so many bumps along the way.

I think there’s nothing wrong with being extra for something special like this. We only live once and life is short. Cherish every moment you have with your loved ones. We never know how long we will be alive until we are not anymore.

Happy birthday to me.

I am grateful and happy to celebrate this life with my people. I am going to cherish all the moments forever.

Thank you 😊

See you in the next story.
